Most Common Freezer Issues

Freezers tend to fail quietly at first, then all at once. A little frost on the back wall, a faint buzzing noise, maybe a puddle you swear wasn’t there yesterday, these small signs usually point to a part that’s wearing out or working harder than it should. We’ve done this many times over the years, so we’ll be able to diagnose the issue and fix it all within the prompt.

Here are some of the problems we’ve ran into:

When frost takes over the shelves or walls, it’s usually the defrost system struggling. Your freezer relies on a heater, thermostat, and timer (or a control board) to melt away ice before it becomes a problem. When one of these stops doing its job, ice builds up until airflow is blocked and the freezer can’t cool properly.

A warm-ish freezer can be caused by a failing evaporator fan, a weak compressor, or condenser coils packed with dust. The evaporator fan is what moves cold air around the compartment, if it slows down or stops entirely, then it’s not going to stay cold.

A loose or cracked door gasket may sound like a small issue, but it lets warm, humid air sneak in. That forces your freezer to run harder and creates frost and temperature swings.

Freezers aren’t silent, but they shouldn’t sound like they’re fighting for their life. Clicking often points to a start relay issue, buzzing could be a compressor trying to start, and rattling usually comes from a worn fan motor.

This usually means the defrost drain is clogged. When your freezer defrosts, the melted water is supposed to travel down a small drain tube. When that tube freezes or gets blocked, the water backs up and ends up on your floor.

If your freezer is running nonstop, it’s trying to hit a temperature it just can’t reach. That often points to a failing thermostat, a sealed system issue, or temperature sensors giving the control board bad information.

What Temperature Should a Freezer Be?

A home freezer should hold -18C (0F). If yours is warmer than -15C, food safety is at risk and the unit needs service. Health Canada gives -18C as the temperature for frozen food storage and 4C or colder for the fridge compartment. Max Appliance Repair Kitchener diagnoses freezer temperature faults same day across Waterloo Region. Source: Health Canada, safe food storage.

To check it properly, stand a thermometer in a glass of water in the middle of the freezer and read it after 8 hours. That gives you a true temperature instead of whatever the door display claims.

Freezer Not Freezing or Frosting Over: Troubleshooting

The freezer runs but everything is soft

Check the setting is at -18C, then check airflow. Packing the freezer tight against the back wall blocks the vents and the cold never circulates. If the setting and the airflow are fine, the evaporator fan or the sealed system needs testing.

There is heavy frost or ice building up on the back wall

That is a defrost system fault: the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, or the timer or control board that runs the cycle. Frost insulates the coil, so the freezer gets steadily warmer as the ice builds. A worn door gasket letting humid air in causes the same thing.

The freezer runs constantly and never cycles off

Filthy condenser coils, a door gasket that no longer seals, or a stuck defrost cycle. Pull the unit out and vacuum the coils first. If it still never rests, book a diagnostic before the compressor takes the damage.

How cold should the fridge be compared with the freezer?

Fridge at 4C or below, freezer at -18C. If the freezer is fine but the fridge is warm, the fault is usually the evaporator fan or the damper rather than the sealed system. See our fridge repair page.

Common Questions

It’s always best to call a professional repair technician sooner rather than later. When repairs are necessary, you might have a few questions. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions.

It depends on the age, the issue, and the overall condition. Freezers are pretty durable, so even older units can often be repaired for far less than the cost of replacing them. If the repair involves a simple part, like a thermostat, fan motor, or gasket, it’s usually worth fixing. If the compressor is failing on a very old unit, then replacement might make more sense.

A bad smell usually means something has thawed at some point. A power outage, a door that didn’t seal properly, or even a slow temperature drop can cause certain foods to spoil without fully defrosting. Odors can also come from a clogged drain tube or moisture buildup inside the liner.

Most freezers need 4-12 hours to reach a stable freezing temperature after being plugged in or after a repair. Larger freezers or ones packed with warm food can take a bit longer. A good rule of thumb: wait until it hits 0°F before loading it up, otherwise the appliance ends up fighting to cool both itself and the food at the same time.

A closed, full freezer can usually stay frozen for 24-48 hours, depending on the size and how well the door is sealed. A half-full freezer may last closer to 12-24 hours. The key is not opening the door, every time you peek inside, you let out all the cold air. If you’re dealing with an outage and notice thawing or pooling water, that’s something we can check once power returns.

Yes. Every repair we do comes with a warranty on both parts and labor, so if anything we’ve repaired gives you trouble again, we’ll take care of it. We want you to feel confident that once your freezer is fixed, it’s staying that way.
